Published: 1 years 278 days ago

Sacramento Bee:  In the four-county area, the percentage of students at or above the proficient level on the STAR English test increased 1.3 points from 2009 to 2010.

The city of Sacramento saw a 2-point increase in the scores of third-grade readers, raising the portion proficient in reading to 39 percent.

In math, third-graders scored 61 percent proficient in Sacramento County, 74 percent in Placer and El Dorado counties, and 60 percent in Yolo County.

Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson called the city results troubling on a blog posted Monday afternoon. He said that the city's third-grade reading scores are improving too slowly. "At the current rate, it will take 20 years before close to 80 percent of our third- graders are on grade level," he said.
