Sacramento City Council debate sought on homeless campground

Published: 1 years 284 days ago

Sacramento Bee:  Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson and Councilman Rob Fong want the City Council to debate whether the city should allow a "safe ground" campground for the homeless.

At Tuesday's council meeting, the mayor asked city staffers to come up with at least three potential locations for a safe ground facility and come back with a report on those sites.

He also wants a timeline on when the facilities could be operational, as well as a framework of who would sell the program to the public.

Johnson has called the issue of finding a sanctioned campground for homeless in Sacramento one of the more frustrating issues of his term.

"I think the safe ground proponents deserve to have us discuss this publicly," the mayor said at his weekly press conference.
