Unions, let the vote take place
Re "Unions balk at Johnson's strong-mayor plan" (Our Region, June 14): Sacramento unions continue to take the low road on the issue of the strong-mayor proposal, trying their best to deny citizens the right to vote on it. I am particularly disappointed at the seeming disingenuousness of Bill Camp, Labor Council chief. Clearly he has the right to speak out against the proposal. But he diminishes his position by deliberately framing it in matters of process, i.e., that union support is contingent on "seeing it in writing," then recommending that a written proposal not be drafted at this time.
It is time for the unions to stop criticizing the draft plan, which in fact reflects the changes recommended in many community and business meetings on the issue. It is time for the City Council to direct the city attorney to finalize a proposal to be placed on the ballot. Finally, it is time for the unions to stop playing politics and start doing what unions are supposed to do: fight for the right of the people to vote on an issue.
