Mayor Johnson expands arts initiative to a 4-year effort

Published: 1 years 359 days ago

Sacramento Bee:  Mayor Kevin Johnson announced that his yearlong For Arts' Sake initiative will evolve into a regional four-year effort to raise funds and elevate the status of the arts in Sacramento.

Johnson appointed the Mondavi Center's executive director, Don Roth, and Western Health Advantage CEO Garry Maisel as co-chairmen of Phase 2 of For Arts' Sake.

Their terms will begin in September, Johnson said Thursday during a meeting at California State University, Sacramento. The pair, who will not be paid, will oversee three new committees, which must reach their goals by 2014.

"This phase will look at public and private finance funding as well as investing in talent, access to the arts and investing in a creative economy," Johnson said in an interview.

The first year of the initiative is expected to cost $125,000. Johnson said that Western Health Advantage has agreed to cover one-fifth of that amount. Included in the amount are funds to hire a project manager.

A crucial focus of the new phase will entail exploring private and
public funding streams.
