Sacramento Bee: The debate over Arizona's immigration law is coming to Sacramento City Hall.
The City Council is scheduled to discuss tonight whether to take a stand on the tough new law, possibly placing economic sanctions against Arizona. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. in the council chambers, 915 I St.
Councilman Rob Fong requested the discussion three weeks ago.
Other California cities have prohibited city workers from traveling to Arizona on official business and severed contracts with companies based there.
Mayor Kevin Johnson said Tuesday that, "personally, for me, I think a boycott would be the thing to do." But he said he wants the council to talk about it before the city takes a stand and that he wants to hear from the community.
On April 28, Johnson wrote in a blog post that the city should follow the lead of other cities around the state and sever economic ties with Arizona. But later that day, after speaking with Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon, Johnson wrote, "Damaging the good work of Mayor Gordon and the many honorable people in his city in retribution for the immigration law can become the equivalent of trying to make two wrongs equal one right."
Johnson said Tuesday he wants the Arizona law challenged in the courts and supports "comprehensive immigration reform" at the federal level.
"I've gotten a lot of feedback from people that do not believe that we, as Sacramentans, should be weighing in at all," the mayor said. "I disagree with that. I think an unjust law anywhere threatens our justice here locally."
