Sacramento Bee: Mayors from across California met in Sacramento on Thursday to discuss strategies for addressing the state's high public school dropout rates.
Nearly one in five students – 18.9 percent – dropped out of California high schools during the 2007-08 school year, according to California Department of Education figures released last year. 2008-09 numbers are due this summer.
"We are making some progress," said San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom. "This will never be solved by making this a school district problem."
Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson hosted the California Mayors Graduation Summit and said he hopes to find ways to increase high school graduation rates.
"We need to understand what the data is saying," Johnson said. "Once we do that we will realize we have a crisis."
