Confidential memos propose tough Sacramento city cuts

Published: 2 years 24 days ago

Sacramento Bee:  Department bosses in Sacramento were asked recently to come up with cuts they thought their agencies could absorb as the city grapples with a $43 million deficit for the coming fiscal year.

The list was eye-opening:  Forty-one positions in the Police Department. The Fire Department's rescue boat. Five pools. Youth sports leagues.

The recommendations, outlined in a packet of confidential memos obtained by The Bee, may be part of the city manager's proposed budget to the City Council. The recommendations also could be ignored.

"This was a budget exercise for the department heads," said interim City Manager Gus Vina. "No decisions have been made on the list at all."

Vina would not discuss the specific recommendations by the department heads, saying he would "not talk about documents that were meant to be confidential."

Vina's office is scheduled to release the outline of a proposed 2010-11 budget on Friday. That release will be followed by weeks of City Council feedback and workshops, with final adoption of the budget by the end of June.
