Johnson won't seek June vote for strong mayor plan

Published: 2 years 93 days ago

Sacramento Bee: Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson backed away from seeking a June vote on his latest strong-mayor plan Tuesday night, tabling a week-old proposal. "I certainly don't want my council colleagues to feel jammed," Johnson told City Council members. He cited the city's "significant budget challenges" in facing a deficit projected at up to $40 million.

And he said he realized "there is not much appetite" from council members to pursue a measure for June.
Instead, the mayor said he will seek to put the measure on the November general election ballot and would raise the issue again in June in hopes of winning council support.
