Sacramento Bee: The Hard Rock Cafe, a downtown Sacramento landmark location with its 36-foot-high Gibson guitar sign, will close when its lease expires in March, vacating a key location as the city struggles to revitalize its urban core.
"It's not good," said Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson about the pending departure of one of the city's international brands.
At City Hall on Friday afternoon, Johnson vowed to pay significant attention this year to retaining downtown businesses and attracting new ones that view Sacramento as a destination.
"Just doing nothing is not acceptable," he said.
Although caught off guard by the Hard Rock departure, he intends to get in touch with the center's remaining tenants to get a read on their viability, he said.
"I don't want to get a notice that another major business is leaving," Johnson said.
