Have you seen the front page news about a new proposal to expand the "brown out" at your neighborhood fire station? According to a report by city officials, the rotating closures of a second fire engine will lead to longer response times and "an increase in property lost." That is unacceptable.
The first round of brownouts already have lead to property damage and injuries. According to the Bee, two fires on Labor Day weekend last year spread into neighboring homes because of the brownouts. Another fire on the American River Parkway also grew "considerably" because the department's grass fire rig was browned out. On top of that, brownouts may have contributed to injuries to several heroic firefighters in a Natomas fire.
I believe that the core function of city government is to protect our families. Our city -- the capital of the sixth largest economy in the world -- must put these essential services first, even when we face a difficult budget challenge.
I know this is late notice, but please try to join me at 2 p.m. TODAY at the Sacramento City Council meeting to object to these reductions. Together, we can stop this proposal in its tracks.
