By Mayor Kevin Johnson

Your voice still matters.

In the past week, I’ve been humbled by the groundswell of citizens who have reached out to show their support in our fight for charter reform.  All of you, from all walks of life, have asked the same question:

“Why won’t they let us vote?”

I understand and share your disappointment.  Last week’s council meeting could have made history. Instead, politics won the day.

This shouldn’t be about politics.  This is about setting a modern course for an emerging city. Yes, the issues are challenging, particularly for those who see our fight for reform in simplistic terms.  A “power grab” by an “ego-driven” Mayor.  A “classic battle” between business and labor.

But while those catch phrases make good headlines, they ignore the truth.

This issue is not about me. Nor is it about my colleagues on the City Council.  It’s about you, the voters.

The decision not to draft charter language was a blow to your right to participate in the democratic process.

But in tough times, the best of Sacramento endures.  Yesterday, something extraordinary took place.  Two of the top legal minds in our community came forward with a draft of the charter language our Council chose not to prepare. They had nothing to gain by doing so, and took no stand on this issue. They simply believed the public needed a common document to analyze, debate and discuss this issue.

It was an inspiring and selfless act of public service.  Please take a moment to read their report here.

Now, many of you have also asked a second question: “What’s next?”

There is still time on the clock.  No doubt, the odds are against us.  But we still have time to restore your rights as voters.  All we need is for three Council Members to reconsider whether hundreds of thousands of citizens deserve to be heard.

Council Members raised two concerns last week: they hadn’t seen enough details, and they hadn’t heard from enough constituents.

We can resolve both of these concerns. The draft language has all the details. Now it’s your turn to act.

Please contact your Council Member encouraging them to review the language and reconsider their vote. Remind them that they must preserve your right to participate and vote.

On my end, I will continue reaching out to my Council colleagues as well.

I understand their resistance to change, but still believe that at the end of the day, they share my belief that voters’ rights must prevail.

I ran for Mayor so I could move Sacramento forward.  And, I will continue to fight each and every day to make this city great.  With your support and participation, I know we will get there together.

Some people refuse to stand on this planet. Moving, changing, development, adaptation, these are the motivation to continue to move forward. They abandoned the trivialization of the concept of the secular and they tend to be perfected with a new concept. Whatever can't become the excuse.Victory, defeat, fragile and sometimes the power savings - these must be gone through and feel in our life like a game, even though we see the signs that may become your indispensable information with peripheral vision. For such people, there is no end, but, there is only the next starting line, while the middle distance is the dust left behind their earlier tracks. These are TAG Heuer values. In addition, they represent a lifestyle. This way of life perfectly embodies TAG Heuer Aquaracer series and its distinctive design. the public does not trust you. You have shown time and time again that you are a bully and are not accountable for your actions. How many times have you bought your way out of trouble?

Give it up mayor. I support letting it be on the ballot, but the reality is that the city council is not going to change its mind. By doing this, you are only wasting council time on an already jam packed July 13 calender and will only reinforce the image in the community that you have a single track focus on this issue. Bring it back in 2012, maybe.
