As the world reacts to the death of John Wooden, allow me to reflect on aspects of his character that will live forever.
His fame came from college basketball, but in many respects, basketball was nothing more than the vehicle that delivered Coach Wooden into our lives.
He would have been remarkable had he chosen to spend his time as a carpenter or lawyer or statesman or farmer or physician. Above all, the legacy of Coach Wooden will be his leadership.
In his book, “Wooden: A Lifetime of Observations and Reflections On and Off the Court,” Coach Wooden wrote,
“There is no area of basketball in which I am a genius. None. Tactically and strategically, I’m just average, and this is not offering false modesty. We won national championships while I was coaching at UCLA because I was above average in analyzing players, getting them to fill roles as part of a team, paying attention to fundamentals and details, and working well with others, both those under my supervision and those whose supervision I was under. Additionally, I enjoyed very hard work.”
With those sentences, Coach Wooden explained the essence of success. Listen to the key words: Roles, team, fundamentals, details, working well with others, hard work.
Anyone can understand those words. And everyone can find success by applying those words day after day.
The genius of Coach Wooden – let me apologize for the word “genius,” because I know he would not approve – was his ability to break down complex issues into clear and basic principles. The world may be a complicated place, but Coach Wooden always made it simple.
For Coach Wooden, the lessons began during his childhood in Indiana. His father, Joshua Wooden, was a grain and vegetable farmer who enjoyed reading poetry to his children. When John was growing up, his father gave him a handwritten list called “Seven Things to Do.” Here they are:
“1, Be true to yourself. 2, Help others. 3, Make each day your masterpiece. 4, Drink deeply from good books, especially the Bible. 5, Make friendship a fine art. 6, Build a shelter against a rainy day. 7, Pray for guidance and count and give thanks for your blessings every day.”
In past years, it was my honor to visit Coach Wooden, to ask questions and listen to him with the goal of hopefully making myself a better person. Hardly a day passes when I don’t repeat one of the little gems he dispensed, such as, “Be quick, but don’t hurry.”
Now, with the news that Coach Wooden has passed at age 99, I realize his great wisdom was actually introduced by his father, who, we can only presume, received the same wisdom from his father.
The news of Coach Wooden’s death has no doubt reminded many people of his profound wisdom. Allow me to close with something Coach Wooden called “Another Golden Rule.” I mention this because we all should take a moment now to thank Coach Wooden for all he has given us.
“Another Golden Rule: Reward individuals for things well done. It doesn’t have to be in a material way. Sometimes a pat on the back is more meaningful in many ways than something material. A smile. A nod.”
To you, Coach Wooden, a smile. A nod.
