On Tuesday, May 18th, over 300 people came to the California Museum to be a part of something that is going to be huge – a regional Green Initiative that will not only change the City of Sacramento, but will transform the region into the place that encapsulates all things green – a green economy, an environmentally friendly region, and a citizenry that actually understands what it means to be sustainable.
First Lady Maria Shriver kicked off the event. She spoke of vision and alluded to the history that could be made when visionaries took the stage and led people in movements, something Mayor Johnson was prepared to do with his Green Initiative.
When Mayor Johnson took the stage his intent was clear, we were at the California Museum because we were going to be historymakers. We were going to grab hold of the region’s challenges – a faltering economy and poorly maintained environment – and we were going to solve them both by creating green jobs, diversifying the economy, and asking everyone to be personally responsible for protecting the regions natural resources.
These are bold goals. Meeting our goals won’t be easy. It is going to take a lot of work and serious focus. The trick will be keeping our eye on the prize – a thriving economy that values natural resources.
As Governor Schwarzenegger reminded us, movements don’t start in Washington, they start at the community level. It’s time for us to be part of a green movement. We can make history if we walk the talk as we diversify our economy.
