Senator Dianne Feinstein is California’s voice in the United States Senate. Last week she spoke in Sacramento at the Metro Chamber before a packed room at the Sacramento Convention Center, focusing on environmental and water issues. I was able to steal some one-on-one time with her after her remarks, meeting with her in a room off the convention floor.
She’s impressive. You can tell how she wields power by being an effective negotiator, a politician that is pragmatic rather than bound by ideology. There’s a lot of talk about her running for Governor in 2010 too. She didn’t give any hints about whether she’s willing to leave Washington, where, since Democrats are in the majority, she is helping California get its fair share of federal dollars and fighting for state interests.
Senator Feinstein, the former mayor of San Francisco, urged me to focus on “quality of life” issues. “When’re you’re Mayor,” she told me, “you need to do with the things that make a difference in people’s lives – education, attracting good jobs, making sure the arts are a key part of the city life.”
That’s good advice. I look forward to working with her as Mayor, as she has an affection for Sacramento and knows too that our city can be so much more.
