The second time was even better. I'm referring to the second of two stakeholder meetings on the future of the K Street Mall and the J-K-L corridor. We called our gatherings "Unlocking the Grid" because that's what we intend to do. The second meeting -- devoted to public comment – was held Monday evening at the Cosmo Cabaret, 10th and K Streets, with almost 200 people in attendance. The first meeting, a week earlier, attracted almost as many downtown business and property owners.
I was very impressed by the public comment and ideas.
One person thought the corridor needed more neon. Another thought free public transportation would enliven the neighborhood.
The ideas flowed for more than an hour, with a lively and compelling discussion on the future of this linchpin in our quest to build a world-class city.
Ultimately, the energized audience demonstrated its love for downtown Sacramento, and a desire to see a compelling mixture of shops, entertainment and housing opportunities.
I opened the meeting by informing the audience about my recent trips to Washington, D.C., Seattle and San Diego. Those cities have faced similar problems, and have found ways to re-energize their communities.
With the help of citizens such as those who participated in our meetings, we can join those cities in success.
As we move forward, we will be sharing ideas with Westfield, owner of the Downtown Plaza. We are building a new relationship with Westfield, and I am optimistic about our future.
