To honor individuals, groups and organizations dedicated to improving their communities, President George H.W. Bush named 1,020 “Points of Light” during his presidency. I was fortunate to be the 411th “Point of Light” in 1991 for my work with St. HOPE Academy. Commemorating the 20th anniversary of President Bush’s bold call to action, I joined past “Point of Light” recipients, volunteers, politicians and policy wonks in College Station, Texas at the Points of Light Institute’s Presidential Forum on Service.
I was thrilled to have the opportunity to shake President Bush’s hand, reintroduce myself and applaud him for his commitment to service. Though walking with a cane, President Bush was full of energy.
The highlight of the evening was President Bush and current President Obama taking the stage together. President Bush symbolically passed the torch to President Obama, who will fan the flames of service that President Bush ignited 20 years earlier.
In his address, President Obama proclaimed, “Service isn’t separate from our national priorities, or secondary to our national priorities – it’s integral to achieving our national priorities.”
My priority as mayor is to create a world-class city – a city that works for everyone. But it starts with Service. To this end, I’m asking that you sign up to volunteer. The change starts with you.
