There are good and honest people in San Francisco. One of them found my stolen garment bag.I never doubted our neighbors by the Bay would do their best to find my bag, which held my most sentimental business suit (more on that later). All the same, I wasn’t getting my hopes up for a miraculous recovery.

Then the phone rang Tuesday afternoon at Sacramento City Hall. An assistant in the mayor’s office spoke with a young man who said he and his girlfriend were walking to a San Francisco restaurant when they spotted the bag on the street.

He described the contents – including items not publicly revealed. My faith was rewarded.

The theft happened last weekend when I turned my back for 30 seconds to help an elderly gentleman get a taxi near Powell Street.

After news of my loss was reported on my blog and in the media, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom and the San Francisco Police Department jumped into the search.

In several conversations over the next two days, Mayor Newsom and his staff told me they were doing everything possible to find the bag. And if they couldn’t find it, they would replace my goods, which included clothing and overnight toiletries.

Now a word about the missing clothing: I haven’t told anyone this, but the missing suit was the suit I wore during my first visit to the White House, more than a decade ago.

Wearing that suit, I walked in the Rose Garden with President Clinton. A photo hangs in my office at City Hall. The picture shows me, the President and The Suit.

Each time I put on The Suit, I remember that day. It’s my Rose Garden suit.

Now The Suit is on its way back to Sacramento. If the young man wishes to go public, that’s his choice. I won’t mention his name here. I will say he will receive a reward and personal thanks from me.

And thanks to everyone in San Francisco, from Mayor Newsom on down.

They say no good deed goes unpunished. Maybe that’s true. All I know is, for today at least, I guess I must be living right.
