On July 28th the validation of over 32,000 signatures signified that the people had spoken. And at 10 p.m. on Thursday night, I along with Councilmembers Cohn, Hammond, Tretheway and Waters voted to honor the will of the people by placing the strong mayor initiative on the June 2010 ballot.
Elected officials, for better or worse, must make compromises and concessions to best serve their constituents – but should never waver on the value of democracy.
I appreciate my colleagues for pushing politics aside to honor the electorate’s right to vote. Thank you for standing up for what is right.
I also appreciate all those who participated in the political process, regardless of their views, because that is what democracy is all about. We all have a civic duty to make our voices heard and exercise our right to vote.
I look forward to engaging in a constructive dialogue over the next 10 months.
